A group of seven alleged members of German far-left organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
