RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
