Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
